Hustle or Barakah ? Your Choice

I was reading surah Takathur today.

It talks about our obsession of gaining more & more (fame, money, knowledge, followers?) & our selective heedlessness towards things that are important – our health, kids, family, the hereafter.

We’re so busy being the next-best-whatever, we lose our health, family ties, sense of purpose & overall well-being!

Dr Asbah Shams’s article on Hustle vs Barakah: balancing work, faith, and life

We’re pushing & pushing & pushing, only to get ahead in this dunya, but forget about the akhirah.

Isn’t this like the best definition of hustle?

Hustle culture asks you to keep pushing, forget about everything else, come out of your comfort zone, never quit, never stop.

Have you seen the hustlers?

Always busy, always tired, bored beyond measure, competitive to the point of envy, never happy, never fulfilled, always looking for ‘something better’,

Below the super successful facade, they have low self-worth, anxiety, health issues, family discord.

And have you looked at the people who embody barakah?

Relaxed, calm, fun to be around, confident, waiting for the next win!

Are they successful? Yes!

Big reason why we say ‘yes’ to hustle is – we want to be successful, get ahead, but don’t know any other way to get ‘there’

“but I don’t want to be a loser in this world”

Sweetheart, you can be a Jannah-bound, barakah-infused muslimah & super successful (& making money) at the same time!

But not through hustle!

“So how?” you ask.

Okay so let me ask you a basic question – which Surah comes after Surah Takathur?

If Surah Takathur talks about what we should not be doing (hustling), the next Surah, Surah Asr gives you the recipe of success!

“By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),

Verily Mankind is in loss, Except those who have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy”

Go to a bookstore, find a bunch of self-help bestsellers & they all talk about the same thing – Believe, Have faith, Be truthful, Be patient, Consistency, Dont do it alone, find your tribe, Work hard.

Piles & piles of books say something that Allah summarized in 3 verses.

So hustle has an antidote – barakah!
